Goodbye Blue Sky. Chao Cielo Azul

Today I completed 99.99% of the sky. It was tough, but now it's done. Thinking about it, I've advanced quite a lot in the last two days. I want to finish the animals now. It should be quick. As you can imagine it's getting easier day by day as there are fewer and fewer pieces to go nuts about. The spectrum narrows down. Now, looking back, I can't believe all those pieces that now reveal a clear picture were once just chaos and confusion scattered all around. Like life, at the end you get to put the pieces together and make sense out of the mess we sometimes find ourselves in. Yeah, I know, I'm gettin' philosophical, but hell, it's a fuckin' 24000 piece puzzle, who wouldn't get philosophical about it. I mean, I thought I was nuts for even giving this a shot. What the hell have I gotten myself in, I remember saying to myself as I started sorting the 6000 pieces of the first bag. That was on January 3th. I still remember the day. But it all comes to life now, the pieces finally revealing themselves. 

Hoy día completé el 99.99% del cielo. Fue difícil, pero ya está hecho. Ahora que lo pienso, he avanzado bastante en estos dos últimos días. Ahora quiero terminar los animales. Debiera ser rápido aquello. Y como podrán imaginarse se está poniendo más fácil día tras día al ir quedando cada vez menos piezas con las cuales volverse loco. Todo el espectro se achica. Ahora, mirando hacia atrás, no puedo creer que todas esas piezas que ahora revelan un dibujo claro y nítido fueron alguna vez sólo caos y confusión salpicados por todas partes. Al igual que la vida, al final terminas poniendo las piezas donde corresponden y lograr dar sentido a todo el desorden en el cual a veces nos encontramos metidos. Sí, ya lo sé, me estoy poniendo filosófico, pero diablos, es un maldito rompecabezas de 24000 piezas. ¿Quién cresta no se pondría filosófico acerca de él? O sea, yo pensé que estaba loco por siquiera intentar hacer este puzzle. ¿En que cresta me he metido? recuerdo haberme dicho a mi mismo mientras comenzaba a ordenar las 6000 piezas de la primera bolsa. Eso fue el 3 de enero. Aún recuerdo el día. Pero todo cobra vida ahora, las piezas finalmente revelándose.            

 No more sky pieces to fit. No más piezas del cielo que calzar.

El día en que apareció la jirafa pequeña - The day the little giraffe appeared

Hoy día fue un día feliz. Fue el día en que apareció por fin la jirafa pequeña perdida, esa que estaba detrás de la grande y más notoria. Esto no pasa todos los días. No todos los días aparece la jirafa perdida, a menos que trabajes en un zoológico. Podemos decir que fue un día que valió la pena, toda gracias a la girafa. Pero no hay que cantar victoria aún puesto que quedan osos, leones, pingüinos y avestruces por ser encontrados...  

Nótese la trompa del elefante cobrar vida. 

Today was a happy day, It was the day that little lost giraffe finally showed up, that little one behind the much bigger and much more notorious giraffe. This doesn't happen everyday. It's not an everyday occurrence that lost giraffes appear, unless you work in a zoo. So we can now say that today was a day worth living, all thanks to the giraffe. But we shall not sing victory yet, for there are bears, lions, penguins and ostriches still to be found...   

Notice the elephant's trunk come to life.   

Animales Salvajes - Wild Animals

En mi último posteo dije que iba a hacer el mar. Cambié de opinión. Creo que lo dejará para el final. Opté por los animales. Aquí los últimos avances.

In my last post I said I was gonna do the sea. Changed my mind. I think I'll leave it for last. Decided to work on the animals instead.      

Una nota sobre las traducciones - A note on the translations

Es importante aclarar que los posteos van en español e inglés para que así gente más gente pueda leerme. Por suerte soy bilingüe gracias a haber vivido en el extranjero por varios años, pero quiero dejar claro que lo que está en inglés no es una copia exacta de lo que está en español. No es una traducción, sino que en inglés expreso más o menos lo mismo que en español, pero sin preocuparme de decir exactamente lo mismo. ¿Por qué? Porque me es más fácil así. 

By the way, what's in English here is not an exact copy of what I say in Spanish. I'm bilingual thanks to having lived in the States for a couple of years, but what I'm doing here is not translating, but just expressing my thoughts in the two languages without worrying about saying something in Spanish and then something else in English. In other words, I just express my ideas in two languages, but I don't translate from one to the other. I can do it, but heck, it's too much work and I really should be worried about the puzzle. Anyway, the posts are in two languages just to get more people interested in what I'm doing. 

Yendo Hacia el Mar - Heading Out to Sea

Hoy he decidido empezar con el mar. Se trata de un trecho que va de un trecho a otro y que está salpicado aquí y allá con algunos animales que parecieran estar disfrutando mucho estar mojándose. La parte del mar en este puzzle no se ve tan difícil gracias a una particularidad de cómo se comporta el agua. Si alguna vez han observado la superficie de un lago o el mar se darán cuenta que se forman pequeñas olas y ondulaciones que van de un lado a otro dependiendo de dónde sople el viento. Y esto es muy bueno porque hacer la parte del mar en cualquier puzzle es más fácil que hacer, por ejemplo, el cielo, que aunque esté con nubes, cuesta saber, o mejor dicho, es imposible saber el sentido en que van las piezas. Una pieza típica de rompecabeza puede encajar de 4 maneras distintas. Cosa de ir girando en 90 grados la piezas. Pero si sabes que, como en este puzzle, las pequeñas ondulaciones del agua van de derecha a izquiera y viceversa, entonces las piezas sólo pueden ir en 2 sentidos. En otras palabras, sólo necesitas hacer un giro de 360 grados. 

Veremos cuánto me demoro en hacer esta parte del puzzle, aunque, debo advertirles que a la noche me voy a la playa a disfrutar de mis últimos días de vacaciones (sí, trabajo, no crean que sólo me dedico a hacer puzzles) por lo que habrán unos 4 días sin avances en el puzzle, a menos que algún duende o fantasma en mi departamento decida cooperar con la odisea. Lo dudo. Debo aclarar también que aunque empecé el 3 de Enero de este año 2013, en Febrero hubieron 3 semanas en que no toqué el puzzle ya que estaba de vacaciones en el Sur de Chile. Duendes y fantasmas en mi hogar tampoco me ayudadron aquella vez. 

Bueno, les dejo algunas fotos para que puedan visualizar mejor lo que pretendo armar.

Today I've decided to start doing the sea. It goes form side to side in the puzzle and you have animals here and there that seem to be having a great time getting wet in the sea. This part of the puzzle doesn´t seem to be that hard thanks to a known fact about water. If you have ever gazed into a lake or the sea you might have noticed the little ondulations and waves that go from side to side depending on which way the wind is blowing. It can be diagonial too, but never chaotic, unless it rains on the water. And this is a good thing you see, for it gives you a clue in terms of which way the pieces of the puzzle go. A typical jigsaw piece could fit in 4 different ways. The piece needs to be moved 90 degrees each time to see what is the right position taking that you are not trying to fit it already to another piece. In other words, a solitary piece of the sky could go in 4 different ways, but a solitary piece of the sea, with wave patterns on it can only go in 2 ways. Get it? I know it's difficult to explain, or maybe I am a lousy explainer. 

Anyway, we'll see how much I take doing this part. Let it be known that I'm going to the beach tonight, so I'll give the puzzle some 4 days of rest (or willl I be giving myself some rest from the puzzle?) Whichever the case the thing is that I want to enjoy the last few days I got before I return to work (Yes, I work, and doing impossible jigsaw puzzles is not all that I do) You should also know that during February I was in the South of Chile for 3 weeks so that made it impossible to fit pices in the puzzle. Not even elves or ghosts gave me a hand. The puzzle just laid there untouched, unfinished, waiting in silence and infinite patience for my return. Will they help me now that I'll be gone for a few days?

Día del Tigre - Day of the Tiger

Hoy armé el tigre en la mañana. No fue muy difícil. pero lo mejor fue que lo pude juntar con una de las zebras (hay dos en el puzzle). De hecho las zebras fueron los primeros animales que empecé por armar. Evidentemente, fue fácil encontrar las piezas indistintamente negras y blancas, y el ensamblaje no fue tan difícil.

Today I started assembling the tiger. It wasn´t that hard. What was great, though, was that I was able to join the tiger with one of the zebras (there are two in the puzzle) In fact, the zebras were the first thing I started to put together. As you can imagine, it was easy to find the easily distinguishable black and white pieces, and putting the zebras together was not that hard either.
